The West Coast Business Chamber (Weskus Sakekamer) acts as a collective voice for the local business community, working to create a supportive and sustainable business environment. Through collaboration with local authorities, community organisations, and private enterprises, the Chamber aims to strengthen economic growth across the West Coast region of South Africa.
Representing more than 150 businesses in and around the West Coast, the Chamber provides a platform for networking, advocacy, and shared opportunities. It operates as a non-profit organisation, funded through membership contributions and the voluntary involvement of its members.
Each year, at the Annual General Meeting, members elect a Management Committee consisting of 5–8 representatives who oversee the Chamber’s operations for a one-year term. Where necessary, additional members may be co-opted to assist with specific portfolios. To guide its initiatives, the Committee implements an annual strategic plan aligned with the needs of the local business community.

St Helena Bay
Historically, St Helena Bay is the location where Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first set foot in South Africa on the 7th of November 1497, and today a monument marks the actual site. In the 1700s the English used St Helena Bay as a soldiers’ outpost. Some of the original barracks is still in existence today. However, St Helena Bay should not be confused with Saint Helena, the island belonging to the United Kingdom. (The island lies some two thousand kilometres west of the coast of southwestern Africa in the South Atlantic Ocean. It was named after Saint Helena of Constantinople and is one of the most isolated islands in the world – the place the British used to imprison first Napoleon, then Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo along with more than 5 000 Boer prisoners during the Second Anglo-Boer War.) Coincidentally the bay was named Bahia de Santa Helena (Portuguese for its current name) after Saint Helena (a devout, influential Christian and mother of Constantine I).
At first the fishing industry in this remote, calm and tranquil village revolved around the drying and salting of fish. Locals nicknamed the bay Agterbaai (‘Bay at the Back’) because of its location. Over the years it evolved into a thriving business exporting fish around the world. Now the greater area consists of other developments like Britannia Bay, Duyker Eiland and Shelley Point (a very secure and luxurious golfing estate). Past the Shelley Point peninsula southward to Cape St Martin in the west, it actually comprises a total of 18 small bays with intriguing names, such as Hannasbaai, Vioolbaai and Stompneusbaai.
Today St Helena Bay is a major fishing village and home to Sandy Point Harbour. In winter it is host to many fishing activities, e.g. the ‘snoekloop’ when snoek (an extremely tasty white fish) is in season, as well as an endangered species of rock lobster and crayfish, for which you need a permit. Other attractions include surfing, birding, and dolphin and whale watching. St Helena Bay is the only area along the South African West Coast where the sun rises across the bay because the town itself faces northeast and almost north. The dual character of the town is a contrast between the older cottages in the original parts with its village lifestyle, and the modern spacious homes along the Golden Mile of bays with new developments offering wonderful sea views, a real sense of exclusivity and elegance, combined with the relaxed atmosphere of West Coast living.

St Helena Bay is a beautiful, tranquil town on the West Coast in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Its 31 km stretch of coastline boasts 18 bays, three working harbors, stunning beaches and rock formations. It is also the only area in the Southern Hemisphere where the sun rises and sets across the bay, making for breathtaking viewing. Dolphins visit the bay in search of food and the calm waters give shelter to southern whales that come to mate and calve in the second half of the year. They can easily be seen from the shore. St Helena Bay is a popular tourist destination, particularly during the spring wild flower season from mid August to September. After good rains the fields are bedecked in the bright colours of myriad flowers, making it a great destination for a winter vacation.
Ancient granite hills and boulders form a backdrop to the town and offer amazing sea views while the pristine white stretches of beach are perfect for scenic walks and even a refreshing dip in the Atlantic. Don’t forget to bring your fishing gear – this is an angler’s paradise! Our quiet bay is ideal for kayaking/canoeing and if you’re into kite-surfing, brave the winds in Langebaan, only a 30-minute drive away. Bird enthusiasts will find plenty of species to observe and record in their logbooks. Bring your bicycle to enjoy the local cycling routes, walking shoes for the various hiking trails or go horse riding on the beach. Swing a club on the golf course at Shelley Point or pamper yourself at the spa in the Wellness Centre. Worth a visit is the monument on the actual site of Vasco da Gama's arrival, the Cape Columbine Lighthouse (19.7 km from St Helena Bay), and the West Coast Fossil Park outside Vredenburg.
