NB! Carefully consider our tips below to avoid falling prey to fly by night installers:
• Decide if you want to be grid tied (hybrid between Eskom and your solar system) or off grid (independent from Eskom).
• We would advise residents to consider the grid tied system because it is way more affordable, R150 000 vs R400 000 and the electricity that you generate from your solar system, if off set against your Eskom bill – can amount to a saving on your monthly electricity bill of anything between 40% – 60% (depending on the size of the solar system – the more solar panels you have – the more electricity you generate and the more you save).
• Decide what size system you need – the main consideration is to calculate how much electricity you need to get through 4.5 hours of load shedding. A mid-range solar system, including a 5kW invertor, 4 – 8kWh batteries •including a 5kW invertor, 4 – 8kWh batteries
• including a 5kW invertor, 4 – 8kWh batteries and a minimum of 4 x 500W solar panels, will comfortably get you through the 4.5 hours whilst running concurrently lights, WiFi, TV’s, computers, microwaves and one or two appliances.
• Quality components – you pay for what you get in this instance! Research, read reviews online and speak with people to get their opinions.
• Go with the pro’s – check registrations and ask for references.
