Holiday accommodation scams have been around for years, and countless people have lost out because of crafty conmen.
While there is no sure-fire way to avoid getting caught, our tips below may steer you away from a scam.
Research, research and research
When booking accommodation, thorough research is crucial. Start by visiting trusted websites and checking the credibility of the accommodation providers.
Too good to be true?
Peak season bookings are more expensive. Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true.
Verify accommodation providers
Look for accommodation providers’ contact details, including a physical address and a working phone number. Cross-reference the contact details with official websites or trusted third-party platforms.
Check out the reviews
Read reviews by other visitors and take note of any bad reviews.
Secure payment methods
Use secure payment methods when booking accommodation. Avoid EFT’s or cash payments as they are difficult to trace and retrieve if scammed.
Communication
Avoid agents who may not have your best interests at heart, communicate directly with the accommodation provider. Ask specific questions about the property, amenities, and terms of stay. Legitimate providers will rarely pressure you into signing up and making instant payments.
Assistance from South African Police Services (SAPS)
If, despite your best efforts, you’re a victim of an accommodation scam, seek assistance immediately by contacting the SAPS to report the incident.
