Board Cracklin Rosie at our Bokkomlaan jetty for a trip upriver to Kuifkop farm. Enjoy brunch or a light lunch with river views at their Coffee Lounge before we pick you up later at your prearranged time.
Birding the Salt Pans
This birding and photography experience requires special permission and the company of the Owner. The pans display vibrant greens, reds, and oranges with stunning textures as the water evaporates, and salt crystallizes. Rare waders like the Phalarope can be spotted here, along with close-up views of the chestnut-banded plover and other waders, offering prime opportunities for birders and photographers.
Special Birding and Photography Cruises
Early morning or late afternoon at low tide are the best times for birding and photography as the sand banks are open and usually teem with birds. We have birding lists on board and expert registered guides will accompany you on the birding trips. They can be pre-booked for the trip at an extra fee. Two-hour and 3-hour trips are available on request.

The Hoedjiesbaai Hotel, partially built into the water, offers a magnificent view of the tranquil bay of Saldanha and surrounding environs. The hotel was built in 1970 and decorated in a retro style with modern fixtures. We have 32 rooms where the rooms on the second floor have private balconies. The rooms are en-suite and spacious with options of a double bed or two single beds.

The hotel is perfectly located to explore the West Coast. It is 150 km from Cape Town International Airport and 7.2 km from the Saldanha Airstrip. The hotel is 10.7 km from the West Coast Mall and within walking distance of shopping centres.
The Eigebraai Restaurant is situated on the 3rd floor of the hotel with a spectacular 360° view of Saldanha and the harbor. Enjoy the home-made local cuisine with wines from our award winning South African wineries. The Laaiplek Hotel is situated in the Laaiplek harbour area on the banks of the Berg River. The hotel has magnificent views of the river and bird-life in absolute abundance. The fish factory in next to the hotel, so on occasion you will be able to watch the fishing trawlers coming and going in full view.
In the mornings you can sit on the hotel patio and watch thousands of birds along the river banks flying out to sea for the day and late afternoons returning to the salt pans for the night.
The hotel offers single and double en-suite accommodation with private patios. Three of the double rooms have a splendour view of the Berg River.
We also have 3 self-catering rooms with separate entrances. Each room consists of twin beds with en suite bathroom. These rooms have a private patio with braai and scullery. You park your car in front of your room.
The Eigebraai Restaurant is situated in the hotel. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. You have the option to sit inside on a windy day or outside on the stoep to enjoy the beautiful view and sunsets. Come enjoy good seafood and local home-made dishes while relaxing with friends or family.

The Riviera Hotel is situated on the Berg River and has a stunning view of the wetland and its abundant bird-life. The mudflat is perhaps the most famous of the Velddrif birding localities and a number of rarities have been seen here.
The Hotel offers single and double en-suite accommodation with selected DSTV and SABC channels. The rooms are spacious and you can enjoy a lovely view of the Berg River from your private equipped patio. The pride of the Riviera Hotel is its honeymoon suite complete with spa and a lounge to relax and enjoy the view.
The a la carte restaurant, “Die Pont’ is situated in the hotel where you can enjoy delicious seafood and a variety of local dishes. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here. We are famous for our scrumptious Sunday buffet lunch for the whole family. Booking is essential.
The Riviera Chalets are situated next to the Riviera Hotel, on the banks of the Berg River. The Riviera mudflat is famous for its birding localities and the view point is within walking distance from the chalets. The Chalets (10) are fully self-catered with built-in braai and patio overlooking the wetland and its abundant bird-life. All units have a fully equipped open plan kitchen to a spacious living room.
The one bedroom units (2) have full bathrooms, a bedroom with 2 x single beds and a sleeper couch in the living area. Sleep maximum 4 persons. The two bedroom units (8) have showers in the bathroom, 2 bedrooms with 2 x single beds in each and a sleeper couch in the living room. Sleep maximum 6 persons.
Parking is available at the chalet with secure access and exit. The chalets are within walking distance of a supermarket, restaurant, liquor store and take-away.
