Kuier met Marinda in Yzerfontein

Article by: Tian van Taak

A national treasure of Afrikaans theatre turns into the mother that cooks for us all. This wizard in the kitchen grabbed the public’s attention during her time on the popular KYKnet reality cooking show Kokkedoor in 2014 by reaching the final.

Engelbrecht followed this up with a popular TV cooking shows and Cook Books. This true gem of the West Coast is like the area she now calls home, Yzerfontein, a true “salt of the earth” individual. No pretence, an abundance in hospitable flair and that x-factor quality that keeps us wanting more of her food, her recipes and more of her!

She describes herself as a no fancy cook. Her food is like the environment that surrounds her, stripped bare of pretence and easy to enjoy. Someone will always find one of her recipes that reminds them of a fond memory or a special moment in time. She has taken food and put an easy, inviting and slightly playful smile on it.

This strong and powerful woman believes that the food on the table should never be more important than the people around the table. Marinda is now blessed as a mother and grandmother and believes she will never stop making and creating food no matter her age. The message she wants to carry across with her culinary journey is that something so arbitrary as cooking can become part of your personality. Cooking should not be work, it is a part of our lives and once we start to enjoy the pleasures of it, we will start tasting the difference in your cooking.
