Road Trip – Hopefield, Vredenburg & Paternoster

Our trip begins on a Saturday morning in Hopefield where the streets are abuzz with people flocking from all over to buy their weekly supply of fresh produce at the local farmers market.

With filled shopping bags, it’s time to relax with a soothing cup of coffee and hearty breakfast at De Deli before exploring the oldest town in the West Coast.

Built in 1879, the old Dutch Reformed Church is a historic landmark and is home to a 100+ year old Foster & Andrews Organ that is still in use during Sunday services.

En route towards Vredenburg on the R45, you will find Die Plaasmol Padstal. Here you can expect a unique café and farmstall experience filled with exiting colours, friendly faces and a variety of activities for young and old.

What is a road trip without a bit of history? Our next destination, also situated on the R45, is the West Coast Fossil Park. World- renowned for its exceptional well- preserved fossil faunal remains dating back as far as 5.2 million years.

As we pass through Vredenburg, one can understand why this Town is known as the commercial and transportation hub of the West Coast with a variety of businesses, shops, hospitals and the West Coast Mall.

The Town was originally known as “Twisfontein” after two competing farmers fought over the only fresh water spring in the area. After an agreement between them was reached and peace returned to the area, it was renamed to Vredenburg.

Last stop Paternoster, but not without a cheese tasting experience at the Afsaal Padstal in Trekoskraal. This hidden gem is an absolute must visit, with a variety of tasty meals, homemade cheeses, jams and the best chicken pies in the West Coast. Don’t drive past the Trekoskraal turnoff without paying them a visit.

After exploring the picturesque fishing village of Paternoster with all its art studios, curio shops and lovely eateries, end your day with an ice cold beer at the famous Panty Bar at the Paternoster Hotel.
